Types of Gable Roofs. Side Gable: A side gable is a basic pitched roof. It has two equal panels pitched at an angle, meet at a ridge in the middle of a building. The triangle section can be left open for an open gable roof, or it can be enclosed for a boxed gable roof.

A casserole of roofs that solves the individual problems created in both the gabled and hipped design is the gablet (UK) or Dutch gable (North America) design. A gablet basically puts a gabled roof on top of a hipped roof.

Also known as The French Roof, the Mansard is characteristic of french building architecture, though many homes take advantage of it’s framing design. It may consist of a flat roof on top, but the main design element is the multi-pitch sloped in what is essentially a hip roof on top of another hip frame.

A combo style roof is one that takes any of the above roof styles and combines them. It can be as unique as you desire for it to be. But it is a great option if you find two roof styles that you think would work well for your home.

Open Gable Roof. The following are the two types of Open Gable Roofs based on the direction the Gable is facing: Front Gable Roof. In this structure, the front gabled building faces the street with its gable. Buildings with this type of roof were extremely common in the medieval Gothic period.

M-Shaped Roof: A type of roof similar to a double-pitched roof except that it rests on two load bearing walls only. It also features a central gutter at a right angle to the front facade. Butterfly Roof: A type of roof formed by two gables that pitch sharply from either side toward the center to resemble a butterfly’s wings.

Sheet Roofing. Sheet roofing is the most economical form of metal roofing. It is also one of the easier-to-install types of metal roofing. The disadvantages of sheet roofing are that it’s not as long lasting, both functionally and aesthetically, as some other types of metal roof systems.
